FREE BIKE CLINIC CHECK UP 

The bike clinic will involve taking in bikes from students and staff of the University, and from members of the public to perform a free “check-up”. This check-up will involve professionally trained and certified Bicycle Mechanics doing an overall health check of the bicycles, and where possible, do some repairs. The repairs could involve replacing; brake blocks, brake cables, brake cable housing, gear cable, gear cable housing and adjustment of brakes and gear indexing. The Mechanic will also attach a bicycle health report, outlining what further repairs are recommended/essential for the safe operation of the bicycle which would be outside the capacity of the bike clinic due to time constraints and space of extra equipment, such as headset repairs, bottom bracket replacements, hub services etc.

TUESDAY 14TH MAY 2024
INCLUSIVE CYCLING COME & TRY, BIKE REPAIR WORKSHOP, COMMUNITY RIDE & FUN DAY

A chance for children and 18-year-olds with additional physical needs and intellectual disabilities to try out our scooters, bikes with stabilizers, our special adapted cycles (tricycles) in our school hall and playground. A Cycle workshop teaching the main parts of a bike, how to fix on the road problems, information on bikes, adapted bikes and trikes. A fun day with activities planned around our pupils’ abilities, treats and fun.

CITY CENTER CYCLE

A cycling event that starts in Eyre Square and loops around a 5 kilometer circuit around the city center for Primary school children.

BIKE RIGHT

Come join the Galway Bay Cycling Club (GBCC) on the 15th of May in association with Buildings  Estates, University of Galway.

The Galway Bay Cycling Club will host a Bike Skills session from 13:00-14:00, along with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) interactive shuttle, which will be on campus from 09:00-16:00. Lots of Road Safety Hi-Vis vests, lights, and more freebies to be had on the 15th!

An Mheitheal Rothar is providing two 1 hour taster sessions in Bike Maintenance to educate the public on bike maintenance.

Winners of the week long week-long competition to do the most cycling to school will be announced.

The class that have made the biggest effort to cycle to school will win a party.

SCOIL CHAITRÍONA SENIOR BIKE WEEK

All 376 pupils, their parents and staff (40) will be encouraged to cycle to school. There will be Cycle safety workshops for all pupils facilitated by RSA, design a bike activity for all pupils – powerpoint/ poster/ lego/ model as well as design a bike week promotional poster for all pupils.

LÁ NA ROTHAR

Bicycle event for children and families as Gaeilge. A bicycle repair workshop, juggling and fire juggling on bicycle performance, a cycle around the Mionloch village, a bucolic haven only 10 minutes from the heart of Galway city. Ice-cream, refreshments and entertainment.

Launch of the completion of three Active Travel Schemes. Minister Ryan to attend. The recent works at Scoil Iognáid (Safe Routes to Schools completion), the new pedestrian bridge at Wolfe Tone Bridge, the Eglinton Canal Active Travel Scheme.

Join us for a gentle potter around Galway City East Side.  We’ll pass through University Campus, Terryland Forrest Park & Organic Garden and have coffee and cake at local venue.

COME AND TRY DAY, BIKE REPAIR WORKSHOP, COMMUNITY RIDE & BIKE FUN

A chance for children and families to come together to have a scouting approach to bike week. Problem solve together, cycle together and experience a biek event in the safe environment of the den.

Cycle to the den, bring in your bike for a health check. Enjoy a cycle workshop teaching the main parts of a bike, how to fix on the road problems, information on the bikes, scoots of all shapes and sizes (from 1 wheel to 3!).

A fun evening with activities planned around our beaver’s abilities. Expect some treats and loads of fun. Join us for a family cycle.

We are trying to build a community of cyclists and encourage cycling to the den going forward!

HIGH NELLY INFORMATION AND BIKE REPAIRS

This event is to show people the great design of bicycles from a bygone time.  We will have a poster display of colourised photos of cycling in Galway many moons ago, people will have the opportunity to try out cycling a vintage high nelly from the fleet Cumann na bhFear has restored and mechanics from An Mheitheal Rothar will be there on the day demonstrating repairs and maintenance on these fantastic old machines.

SUNDAY 19TH MAY 2024
SLI NA GCAISLEAN AKA THE SEVEN CASTLES HERITAGE CYCLE TRAIL

‘Slí na gCaisleán’ (‘The Way of the Castles’) represents a guided ‘Off the Beaten Track’ heritage cycle tour along a 40km looped trail that encompasses seven castles on the north and eastern side of Galway city and into Galway county. The tour will start at the Plots on the Dyke Road and continue to the vicinity of castles at Terryland, Menlo, Cloonacauneen, Killeen, Ballybrit, Castlegar and Ballindooley.This leisurely cycle will journey over hills, along botharins, past abandoned farms, ruined castles, karst outcrops, bogs, lakes, dykes, turloughs and meadows.

The tour will introduce participants to the wonderful natural and built heritage that exists not far from the hustle and bustle of a major modern built-up city. There will be opportunities to tour local historical sites and beautiful rural landscapes, to enjoy a group picnic and to have a light lunch on route.

Please note that participants should wear suitable clothing, and bring water and a puncture repair kit.
