Customers advised to:
- Plan ahead and leave extra time for journeys
- Book in advance where possible
- Consider all accommodation and transport options
Dublin is set to come alive this month thanks to an impressive range of concerts, festivals and sporting events that are due to take place during June.
While these events provide a great opportunity for locals and visitors alike to enjoy all Dublin has to offer, it does mean that public transport services are likely to come under pressure as a result.
Particularly heavy demand is expected on the weekend of Friday 28th to Sunday 30th June, when a number of major events are taking place in a variety of locations around Dublin, and is likely to be very challenging from a public transport point of view.
Events taking place
Events scheduled to take place that weekend include:
- Dublin Pride, which will attract some 100,000 attendees, and which will give rise to diversion of services in the city centre
- Three Taylor Swift concerts in Aviva, with a total of 150,000 fans expected
- Shania Twain in Malahide with 27,500 expected
- Flavours of Fingal in Newbridge House, Donabate with 130,000 expected over two days
- Longitude in Marlay Park, with 80,000 expected over two days
- All Ireland football quarter-finals over two days, with over 100,000 expected
- Saw Doctors in Fairview, with an expected attendance of 8,000
- Trinity Summer Series 28 Jun to 4 Jul 2024
600,000 people travelling to events
This means that there will be some 600,000 people on the move, going to and from these events, in addition to the normal demands on public transport. As a result, public transport will be under strain, which will have an impact on some services.
In some instances, promoters are working with commercial transport companies to provide shuttle services, and we would encourage attendees to use those where possible.
Transport operators will endeavour to add additional capacity to help cope at times of greatest demand, but the scope to do so is limited, given high demand for scheduled services, which at all times are prioritised.
Plan your journey ahead of time
TFI advice to people attending events is:
- Plan your journey well ahead of time.
- Consider all accommodation and transport options. For those able to do so, it may make more sense to walk at least some of the way, particularly in city areas.
- For inter-city bus and train journeys, book in advance.
- Check your event’s website for transport advice.
- If there is a dedicated transport service arranged for your event, use it and book it in advance.
- Check transport operators’ and TFI websites.
- Travel early and allow extra time for your journey, coming and going. Remember, your journey at the end of the event may be delayed due to heavy demand.
- Take water, and stay hydrated, and please note alcohol is not permitted on board public transport.
- Follow the direction of event organisers, transport staff and Gardaí at all times.
- If you are not attending any of the major events, consider travelling at less busy times.
While the weekend of Friday 28th June will be particularly busy, other weekends between now and the end of August will also see significant levels of activities in terms of sporting events, concerts and festivals, and public transport customers should heed the advice offered.
