The ‘Staff Respect’ campaign from Transport for Ireland aims to encourage customers to show respect for public transport drivers, staff and taxi drivers who provide us all with vital services.
We want to highlight the important role public transport workers play in keeping Ireland moving. After all, where would we be without them?
The campaign is being supported by the NTA in partnership with Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, Iarnród Éireann, TFI Local Link, Luas and Go-Ahead Ireland.
By rolling out the campaign, we aim to encourage greater levels of respect from customers for drivers and staff working across the TFI network.
Public transport staff have earned our thanks and deserve respect from all commuters. We hope that everyone travelling is aware of their contribution and is polite and kind on their journey.
Here are a few pieces of bus, tram and train etiquette that can make everyone’s journey, that little bit smoother. A bus (or Luas / Train) is a shared space and therefore a shared experience. That daily commute can be improved with small acts of self-awareness from you and others.
Please keep your feet off the seat and also your bags!
Your shoes do most of the leg work every day, so having them on the seats can dirty them up. Having your bag on the seat can also takes up space for that person that just needs a sit down after a long day.
Keep those earphones plugged in!
We’re sure your music taste is nothing less than exquisite, but playing loud music can disrupt other passengers’ journeys and take away from that smooth journey we all try to create.
Be very careful when getting off the bus or leaving a tram stop / train station!
Keep your eyes open for other road users. Slipping on banana peels is comical, putting yourself in danger getting off the bus is not, or as you leave a Luas stop / train station. Road traffic users are unpredictable, this is why you never know what your stepping into, especially when other road users are involved. So be very careful when getting off the bus/ crossing from Luas/train stops!
Getting on & Getting off the tram (Luas)
When boarding the tram, please wait for people to get off Luas first and then get on: it will be easier and you will have more room.
Please wait until the tram has left the tram stop before crossing the tracks.
Cross at the designated crossing points and always look both ways for approaching trams. Mobile phones and headphones can distract you.
Do not distract the bus/tram/train driver!
All of our bus, tram and train drivers are incredibly warm people. I’m sure they’d love to discuss how your day is going, but their concentration is of the upmost importance to everyone’s safety. Both inside and outside the bus, Luas or train. So keep the chats to yourself.
At Stops: Please use the bins provided at each Stop for your litter, or take your litter home with you to bin it there.
Train: Smoking is prohibited on all trains, offices and enclosed station areas. Iarnród Éireann treats replacement devices such as e-cigarettes in an identical manner to traditional cigarettes and they cannot be used onboard trains, within offices or in enclosed station areas.
Luas: Prohibited – Smoking any cigarette, cigar or pipe, or be in possession of any lighted material or use any nicotine inhalation device or electronic cigarette;
Bus: There is a ban on tobacco smoking which includes the prohibition of e-cigarettes and smoking vapour devices.
Public transport operators prohibit the carriage of e-scooters for safety reasons and to help prevent the risk of combustion on board buses and trains. This includes those that can be folded or carried.
