Transport for Ireland (TFI), partnered with The Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) and Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind (IGDB), would like to raise awareness for our Wheelchair Priority Space Campaign.
One of the biggest issues facing wheelchair users is the availability of wheelchair spaces onboard public transport. Without access to this area, it often means that those who need it most may not be able to board a bus, tram or rail service to reach their planned destination.
Those who took part in this campaign did so to help raise awareness on why the wheelchair space is important for those who need it.
TFI’s new fleet of buses include space to store luggage, a designated space for wheelchair users and a designated space for buggies.
In general, the majority of people who do not have additional needs, have a number of choices on the spaces they sit or stand in. For some people with disabilities it is the only option that they have, so please leave it vacant for those who need it the most.
Everyone deserves equal access to public transport. When a wheelchair space is being used by someone who does not need the space, it takes away a person’s right to access the bus, train or tram.
Please keep the wheelchair space free for those who need it. If blocked, please allow those who require access to the wheelchair space to obtain it. Remember, public transport is a place for everyone.
This campaign is in honour of Micheál Hughes
