Tram

For wheelchair users and those with reduced mobility, Luas have installed lifts, ramps, and car parking spaces where necessary.

All trams and platforms are fully wheelchair accessible. The platforms are raised 280 mm above the track and are accessible via the short 5-6 m ramps located at one or both ends of the platform where necessary. Where required, there is a lift to provide access to the platform.

On trams, there are two designated areas for wheelchair users, accessible via the 4 central sets of double tram doors. These areas are indicted by the double-sided wheelchair stickers on the windows above the fold-down seats and back rest area. Wheelchair users have priority over everyone else for use of this space.

Once on board, wheelchair users should apply their brake, securing themselves against the side grab rails and face rearwards for maximum safety while traveling.

If you are unable to board a Luas or require assistance, press the Emergency Help Point button located at the end of the shelter next to the ticket vending machine, which will connect you to the Central Control Room, who will provide emergency assistance where required.

Parking for Luas passengers with disabilities is free of charge in designated Blue Badge spaces. You must ensure that you visibly display your Blue Badge pass and park in a designated Blue Badge parking spaces. These spots are offered on a first come, first served basis. If upon arrival, there are no available Blue Badge Parking Spaces then parking in the other spaces is permitted, and is free of charge as long as your Blue Badge is displayed.

Most Luas stops have two 40m long x 3m wide platforms at each side of the track, except at Harcourt and Busáras, where the platforms lie between the tracks. Areas of the Green Luas line where travel is one-directional, in the loop between Westmoreland – Parnell – Trinity, only have one platform. The platforms are raised 280 mm above the track and are accessed by short 5-6 m ramps located at one or both ends of the platforms.

The following stops can be accessed by lift:

  • KILMACUD has a lift serving each platform.
  • BALALLY has a lift accessible from both platforms, located on the inbound side.
  • RANELAGH has a lift accessible from both platforms, located on the outbound side.
  • CHARLEMONT has a lift accessible from both platforms, located on the inbound side.
  • CONNOLLY has one lift and an escalator adjacent to the Luas platforms, plus an internal lift inside the main station entrance.
  • DUNDRUM lift accessible from both platforms, located on the inbound side.
  • PHIBSBOROUGH has 2 lifts accessible from both platforms, one located on the outbound side and the other on the inbound side.

All lifts have an intercom located at the Emergency Help Point to allow you to contact Luas Central Control Room in the event of an emergency. All lifts are covered by CCTV cameras internally and externally.

Please be sure to check the travel updates section of www.luas.ie and the Luas mobile app for information regarding up-to-date lift information.

The majority of TFI bus services are low floor. These are accessible for wheelchairs and have a designated wheelchair space. Wheelchair users have priority over everyone else for use of this space.

On Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland services, wheelchairs can be accommodated up to a size of 70cm wide and 120cm long and does not require booking in advance. All buses will stop if there is a wheelchair user at the bus stop.

The Bus Éireann fleet that operates on City and Town services is 100% wheelchair accessible and does not require booking in advance.

TFI LocakLink LWR wheelchair access

90% of TFI Local Link services are wheelchair accessible and it is possible to divert routes for pick-ups where residents have mobility difficulties. It is advised you call in advance of your journey to pre-book a wheelchair space on TFI Local Link services.

When boarding a bus, please consider the following:

  • Keep clear of the bus while it is kneeling, and the ramp is lowered.
  • Be patient and wait for the ramp to rest on the footpath. When the ramp is down, board the bus facing forward. This makes it easier to position yourself once on board.
  • Once you are on board, position yourself in the wheelchair space with your back against the backrest and put your brakes on to make sure your chair does not move when the bus does.
  • To leave the bus, press the button with the wheelchair symbol on it next to the wheelchair space shortly before your stop. Please be patient as the safety arm is raised (on the EV type buses only) and the driver lowers the ramp.
  • Always board and exit the bus by the front doors. The ramp exit is only at front doors.

Procedure for a broken wheelchair ramp

If you are unable to board a Dublin Bus because of a broken ramp, please wait for the next bus and inform our Customer Comment Desk by phoning 01-8734222

If a wheelchair ramp malfunctions on a Go-Ahead Ireland service, the driver will radio control to see when the next bus is arriving. If this is not suitable for the customer the driver will organise for control to organise a taxi for the customer.

Bus Éireann Stations have accessible features. There are no Bus Stations for Dublin Bus, Go-Ahead Ireland or TFI Local Link.Taxi wheelchair sing on top of the car

Wheelchair Priority

One of the biggest issues facing wheelchair users is the availability of wheelchair spaces onboard public transport. Without access to this area, it often means that those who need it most may not be able to board a bus, tram or rail service to reach their planned destination.
